New Delhi (21.04.2026): The obvious has started reflecting with the newly appointed Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary arriving New Delhi on April 21, 2026 for top level consultations and to seek specific instructions on the formation of his new cabinet. The BJP after having occupied the post of chief minister for the first time since independence, the selection and oath taking of cabinet ministers is still pending.
This is the first indication that how "power" centre of Bihar has shifted from the state Capital Patna to national capital New Delhi. This process was smooth when Nitish Kumar was the CM of Bihar of the NDA. Now, the Chief Minister has to seek nod from the top brass of the party on each step being taken for the governance in Bihar.
The first puzzle to solve for Samrat Choudhary is cabinet formation. The absence of former CM Nitish Kumar's son Nishant Kumar in the Bihar cabinet would put the state government on tenterhooks. Nishant has been accorded Z category security. This is a clear indication that heir apparent will wield power in the current tenure. But Nishant is not accepting any cabinet berth. He will tour the state, work for the organisation and then decide his next course of action.
Political analysts believe that former CM Nitish Kumar still wields considerable clout as he is the only face of the masses. The BJP will try to emerge on its own during next five years. So, this shift may be a gradual process. The BJP can patiently wait for the post Nitish era to consolidate further. This seems possible only 2030 onwards.
Tackling an ally and partner of Nitish Kumar's stature is real challenge for the BJP. The BJP is unable to unveil its blueprint in Andhra Pradesh also where N Chandrababu Naidu's astute manoeuvring is leaving little space for the BJP. The Andhra CM is a credible partner and challenger too. So is Nitish Kumar. How Nitish plays his cards next needs to be watched closely. His health is on the decline. Still, he can fox the BJP on any given occasion to keep JD-U kicking in Bihar politics.
