New Delhi (20.06.2026): In a move that underscores the NaMo 3.0 administration’s deep premium on continuity the New Delhi establishment is reliably learnt to be considering a rare, third successive tenure extension for the incumbent Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director, Tapan Kumar Deka (IPS: 1988: HP).

If approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), Deka’s term will be extended beyond its current deadline of June 30, 2026.

He initially took the helm of the internal intelligence agency on July 1, 2022. He has already received two consecutive one-year extensions. His initial two-year fixed tenure ended on June 30, 2024, following which the Centre extended his service to June 2025, and subsequently to June 2026.

A section of top bureaucrats says that the top leadership’s absolute trust in Deka’s operational oversight on sensitive domestic counter-terrorism and regional internal security vectors makes him indispensable for the current landscape.
