Kolkata (01.01.2026): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on December 31, 2025, appointed Nandini Chakraborty (IAS: 1994: WB) as the new Chief Secretary of the state. With this appointment, Chakraborty becomes the first Bengali and woman to hold the top bureaucratic post in West Bengal. She succeeds Manoj Pant (IAS: 1991: WB), who has been reassigned as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister. However, the West Bengal CM was expecting extension for Pant amid all odds. Chakraborty's elevation to the post of CS has drawn attention within bureaucratic circles, as she has superseded several officers senior to her in service.
