2141New Delhi (26.10.2022): When 24 Akbar Road, the AICC Headquarters, is all set to witness Mallikarjun Kharge taking over as the new President of the Congress, many new equations will unfold. The general notion in politics is that anyone having a Godfather shines like a star. Late Oscar Fernandez, once eyes and ears 10 Janpath, is considered to be the factor behind Kharge's rise in the 1990s. And now in 2022, Kharge has risen to occupy the top post of the party, though a shadow of 10 Janpath. He is said to have his right-hand man as Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain, former JNUSU President and presently a Rajya Sabha Member from Karnataka. It is said that it was Kharge who ensured Rajya Sabha seat for Dr Naseer. Insiders say that Kharge at the helm of the party affairs will, in all likelihood, have Dr Naseer as an asset. Sources said that in the midst of Bharat Jodo Yatra, the astute political strategist, crisis managers suddenly had a call from the Congress High Command in the last week of September for a closed-door meeting. Interestingly, Randeep Singh Surjewala, D K Shivkumar, and Dr Syed Naseer Hussain went to 10 Janpath together but only Dr Naseer attended the meeting with Sonia Gandhi. It was the day that reportedly marked the candidature of Kharge for the Party President’s election final. Party insiders say that one should not be surprised if Dr. Naseer is picked up as Secretary to Party President Kharge, the post that was once held by Ahmed Patel as Secretary to Congress President Sonia Gandhi for decades till his last days. Like Patel, Naseer too didn’t have a mass base because the electoral politics in Karnataka, especially a few constituencies, have been a game of billions which made his venture into electoral politics tough. Having been active on the ground in the last few years he may break the barrier in the future, but for now, he plays his cards smartly. Dr Naseer knows well how to climb the cliff; slowly and steadily. He knows well how to sustain and ensure his utility for the top brass. (By Rakesh Ranjan)
