It's Amit Versus Ahmad in Gujarat's Rajya Sabha poll today. The outcome of the contest between the two giants would depend on Shankarsinh Vaghela, who left the Congress Party not too long ago. Amit Shah is personally contesting for one of the three seats, while Ahmad Patel, Sonia Gandhi's man Friday, has been cornered to defend his seat in the contest. With six Congress MLAs having resigned from the 182-member state assembly, a candidate fetching 45 votes would win. This number could come down as there is a distinct possibility of some MLAs belonging to the Shankersinh Vaghela camp abstaining or exercising the NOTA option. The two other candidates in the fray are Union minister Smriti Irani and Balwantsinh Rajput, who quit as Congress chief whip to join the BJP last month. The BJP did a mock poll under the supervision of Shah to ensure all MLAs get it right on Tuesday. There is a clear possibility of cross-voting on Tuesday, a trend which was witnessed during the presidential polls last month when nearly a dozen Congress MLAs appeared to have voted for the NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind. The Election Commission's move to allow NOTA (none of the above) option adds a new dimension to the election.
