NEW DELHI (04.06.2026): A breakaway group of Trinamool Congress (TMC) declared Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly which claims to have the support of 60 MLAs. Ironically they want their leader to be Mamata Banerjee but have clear no for Abhishek Banerjee. But the real worry of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is not these MLAs but TMC's Lok Sabha MPs. Any split there may not only further weaken the TMC but also strengthen the BJP.
Besides 60 MLAs claiming to be separate from the rest of the 20 in support of Mamata, motormouth Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim too resigned, making things even difficult for the mercurial leader. However, the BJP leadership is not ready to accept anyone from the TMC at least for now but there are certain Lok Sabha MPs who in any case won’t go to the BJP. There are many who might support the BJP to get many bills passed that the BJP is planning to table soon including Delimitation Bill. If Trinamool Congress leaders do the same what they did in the assembly, reviving political fortunes for Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee would be difficult.
