New Delhi (15.06.2024): With the incumbent BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda taking over as one of the ministers in the Modi cabinet, now it is certain that there would be a new BJP president to run the party affairs. There are many Assembly elections due in the days to come from Delhi to Maharashtra to Haryana. Two important names that have been doing rounds very strongly for the BJP president have been included in the Modi cabinet making it clear that they may not be in the reckoning. However, RSS still wants to pitch for one of them. Some of the names that are doing rounds include:
Sunil Bansal: Team of Amit Shah and Sunil Bansal had done wonders in Uttar Pradesh in the past what even  the staunchest BJP worker would not have imagined as the party had won 71 seats in 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Bansal has done it again when he was sent to Odisha where he managed 19 out of 21 seats for the BJP in 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The way BJP was restricted to 240 Lok Sabha seats in these elections, the party needs to re-strategies for future elections and Bansal could be the best bet. He has the blessings of top BJP leaders but a section in the BJP is opposed to his ascendency and the attention that he gets from top leadership.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan: Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister is the new Union Agriculture Minister but the RSS is still insisting on his name for the National BJP president as he is the leader who can develop a consensus and take everyone in the party along. The party needs only such a leader at this juncture when party workers are not only demoralised but angry for being neglected. No one could be the better balm than him but Modi wants him in the government to deal with farmers’ crisis as it too needs similar manoeuvring and skillsets.
Devendra Fadnavis: Deputy chief minister of Maharashtra too is in the reckoning for the post of party president. He even offered to step down as Dy CM of Maharashtra to work for strengthening the BJP as he was not comfortable with the current responsibility. Being from Nagpur is the added advantage for Fadnavis and if he gets the responsibility, he will be the second president from Nagpur after Nitin Gadkari. But BJP’s poor performance in Maharashtra may go against him.
Vinod Tawde: Incumbent party general secretary is very close to Modi-Shah duo. He was instrumental in over 100 leaders joining the BJP before Lok Sabha elections. The BJP failed to get what it expected and assembly elections are not too far off, so any leader from Maharashtra might be of a good help as national party president. But the success rate of leaders joining the BJP before 2024 LS elections may go against him.
Anurag Thakur: Will Anurag Thakur take a leap from Yuva Morcha president to national BJP president. He was under tremendous pressure while handling I&B ministry but he cannot be called as a bad I&B minister. He is dropped from the cabinet certainly to get some organisational role. Under his tenure, Yuva Morcha grew leaps and bound. But the only issue is that two successive party presidents from the same state may not go down well. But the present BJP leadership defied every norm and set a new pattern.
Tarun Chug: Tarun Chug is another name who is also a national general secretary of the BJP. The party has been successful in garnering good number of votes in Punjab. In such a situation, a leader from Punjab may help further to consolidate vote bank of the BJP for next Assembly elections that the BJP might plan to go it alone. A national party president from the state where the BJP has to work on to strengthen its presence, Chugh could be a good option. However, he lacks dynamism that party needs. He is of the same temperament as of J P Nadda which will not be of any help to the BJP.
K Annamalai: When the Tamil Nadu BJP president was not included in the Council of Minister, speculation started doing rounds that he might be given some important assignment. The way he generated hope for the BJP in Tamil Nadu, the party may take his services at national level and BJP national president for him is not ruled out completely. The only problem is his poor Hindi communication but he is many times better than Jana Krishnamurthi, the national BJP president from Tamil Nadu.
