New Delhi (21.07.2026): To east out burden on the Supreme Court, the Narendra Modi government tabled the bill to increase authorized number of judges in the Apex Court. The bill intends to change the limit from 33 to 37 Supreme Court judges other than the Chief Justice of India. With the inclusion of the Chief Justice, the authorized number of judges would be 38.
The bill was presented by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal called it "Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill 2026" in Lok Sabha. This move comes after the Centre already promulgated an ordinance effecting the same change. The amendment only changes the limit of judges. It does not change the powers of the Supreme Court, its jurisdiction or the process of appointing judges. Currently, the Supreme Court is running below even the earlier limit of judges.
