Kerala may face an acute shortage of experienced IAS officers because some of them may be retiring over the next few months or may get deputed to the central government. Additional chief secretary (revenue and disaster management) P H Kurien may retire at the end of this month, additional chief secretary (home and vigilance) Subrata Biswas in April and additional chief secretary (health and family welfare) Rajeev Sadanandan in May 2019. Further, a couple of senior officials are likely to go on central deputation. Principal secretary (finance) Manoj Joshi is said to have sought permission, which has been granted, to leave on central deputation. Secretary of cultural affairs, animal husbandry, dairy development and zoo departments Anil Xavier, secretary of general administration (Sainik welfare) department Sumana N Menon, land revenue commissioner A T James, Supplyco chairman and managing director M S Jaya and Kerala state cooperative bank director E Devadas are also set to retire in a few months. While Xavier will retire on January 31, Menon will retire in the end-May and James on February 28. Services of Jaya and Devadas will end on May 31 and March 31 respectively. Two officers from the state cadre at the Centre will also retire this year: telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan on July 31 and additional secretary, ministry of coal, A K Dubey at the end of this month. Further, chief of vigilance and anti-corruption bureau DGP B S Muhammed Yasin is scheduled to retire on February 28. Since the post of vigilance director is a cadre post and also a sensitive post that can build or tarnish the image of the government, the government may be extra careful while finding the replacement. At the same time, the only official who is likely to come back to the state cadre, Alkesh Kumar Sharma, is learned to have applied for an extension in deputation.
