CHENNAI (30.05.2026): The Tamil Nadu government on May 29, 2026 appointed Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal (IPS: 1994: TN) as the Director General of Police and Head of the Police Force of the state.

Agrawal is on Central deputation and is serving as the Special DG, Border Security Force (BSF), Delhi. He replaces DGP/HoPF Sandeep Rai Rathore (IPS: 1992: TN) who was appointed DGP by Election Commission of India on 04.04.2026. Aggarwal was in the panel of three IPS officers that also included Rajiv Kumar (IPS: 1992: TN) and Sandeep Rai Rathore which was recommended by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the appointment of state DGP. The Tamil Nadu government has written to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to relieve Aggarwal from the BSF.
