search-for-chief-statistician-to-begin-shortlyEven though TCA Anant retired last month, the government is yet to begin the search for the country's new Chief Statistician. Anant retired on January 31 after holding the office for seven-and-a-half years. By virtue of his office, the chief statistician also holds the charge of Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), besides that of data divisions of Central Statistics Office, National Sample Survey Organisation as well as the Programme Implementation wing and the MP Local Area Development Scheme. At present, KV Eapen, Secretary, Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, has been given the additional charge of the post of Secretary, MoSPI. Indianmandarins has learnt that the post may be advertized and followed by the constitution of a search-cum-selection committee under Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha to shortlist the candidates. The panel of shortlisted candidates will be sent to the Prime Minister-led Appointments Committee of Cabinet. Since the selection process may take three months, the appointment is not likely before June. Professionals in the field of statistics and economics as well as government officials with the requisite qualifications will be eligible to apply.
