BJP general secretary Ram Madhav and PDP supremo Mehboob Mufti failed on Saturday to negotiate a compromise and provide a government to J&K. Indianmandarins has learnt that 10 weeks of suspense over government formation may be capped by a split in the ranks of PDP. Sources report that, despite a stringent anti-defection law in the state, about 15 PDP MLAs may break ranks, form a separate group, and tie up with the BJP to form government.
Whatever, it's clear that both PDP and BJP, having taken extreme stand, don't seem to be climbing down from their stated positions. However, there is still some time left before April 8 deadline set by Governor NN Vohra. if the two parties don't moderate their position and adopt a pragmatic outlook before Governor Vohra calls Mehbooba - as head of the largest party in the assembly - to form the government, the current political brinkmanship may trigger a fresh election.
