Senior Indian Revenue Service officer Rani Singh Nair (IRS IT:1979) took over as new chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) as the incumbent Atulesh Jindal retired on Sunday; 31 August 2016. Jindal took over as CBDT chief in February this year.
Ms Nair is presently working as Member (Legislation and Computerization) in the CBDT, the policy-making body of the I-T department.
Though the government has already issued an order for her appointment as the "acting" chief of CBDT; the ACC had further issued fresh ACC order to enable her to take the regular charge.
Nair has tenure till 31 October during which she will be looking to achieve success under the one-time domestic black money disclosure scheme being run by the government, also called the income declaration scheme (IDS). It will close on 30 September.
Nair has been instrumental in framing the procedures and protocols that led to the rollout of the IDS on 1 June this year that aims to fish out black funds from the domestic arena. The CBDT has six members apart from the chairperson and is responsible for framing policy and administrative issues related to direct taxes and the I-T department
