Setting aside superficial rumours about S L Bunker to become acting Chairman CCI the Modi Govt acted swiftly to appoint new chief of country's competition watchdog and fair-trade regulator and appointed Devendra Kumar Sikri (Rtd IAS:1978:GJ) new Chairperson of Competition Commission of India.
Sikri will have tenure of about two and half years. He superannuated as secretary, Department of Justice on 31 July 2013. He also served in ministry of women and child development, Registrar General of Census.
The outgoing Chairman Ashok Chawla (Rtd IAS:1973:GJ) received farewell yesterday after-noon. Chawla retired as Union Finance Secretary in January 2011 and made it as second Chairman of CCI in June 2011 as successor to Dhanendra Kumar; the first Chairman of CCI.
CCI was established in 2003 to replace Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission. But under attack from a section of big business houses the first Chairman was appointed in February 2009 only.
