New Delhi (23.08.2024): A gossip, about a govt department housed in Jeewan Tara, published in a web news portal today invited a wide criticism. Readers across service, cadre and batch termed it a cooked-up gossip. In journalism a misplaced editorial leads to a credibility crisis. What makes a news a gossip is when news is not substantiated with evidence or things presented in perspective. It may happen sometimes due to error of judgment. If it recurs quite often, it sounds as if something is fundamentally wrong. Getting any source-based off-the-record information is an accepted media practice but even carrying off-the-record information which cannot be substantiated is unethical, wrong and libellous. Despite all technological advancement, journalism still needs rigorous leg work and personnel interactions. The chances to getting carried away can’t be ruled out, in some other cases quid pro quo benefits are quite tempting. This is how the news website in question operates and gets indulged into by tarnishing the image to keep its source happy by lending their shoulders to fire from or may be in-lieu of something. Stationed far away from the power corridors the desktop-dependent web-media outlet has apparently adopted this model of short-cut journalism.
