New Delhi (03.08.2021): New Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Anurag Singh Thakur has set out to do what his predecessors purportedly failed to achieve: refashioning the image of the NDA administration as one that cares for the people and which has been aggressively and undauntedly attending to their multiple problems and resolving them one by one despite the Covid pandemic and its devastating impact on the life and earnings of the people.

It is said that for some time, particularly after the Covid pandemic threw an already decelerating economy in a disarray, there has been a great degree of unease, bordering on dismay, at the abject failure of the I&B Ministry to neutralize the anti-NDA propaganda and push a counter-narrative to highlight how the government slowly, steadily, and surely brought a pandemic of global dimension under control, neutralized its devastating effects on the life and earnings of the people, and how a slew of reforms, initiated before and during the pandemic, has triggered megatrends of growth in industry and manufacturing, banking and finance, and digitization.

Reportedly, the government has also been unhappy with the inadequate projection of its role as a hunter of corporate swindlers and its serious global efforts to bring them to justice.

Clearly, Thakur has a huge menu but has the mandate to fix things according to the requirement of the administration. To begin with, he has focused on the Indian Information Service (IIS), the linchpin of the government's publicity affairs. He has reportedly redistributed the portfolios of officers effective July 20. Interestingly, the same was done in March this year by the previous minister, but Thakur undid the whole thing and did things in his own way.

One has to wait and watch how Thakur fares. He is young and prone to not accept things lying down. So IIS officers, particularly those dealing with field publicity, AIR, and Doordarshan have to show extra-imagination and dedication to retain their jobs lest the wrath of the Minister visits upon them.
