New Delhi (29.12.2023): Riding on the wave of successfully handling of law-and-order issue in the state, Yogi Adityanath seems to have signalled that his Man Friday ADG Law & Order Prashant Kumar (IPS: 1990: UP) may become the next DGP of the state with Kumar being promoted to Director General rank w.e.f. 01.01.2024.
Though his promotion to the DG rank is a time-bound exercise but in the wake of approaching date of retirement of incumbent officiating DGP Vijay Kumar (IPS: 1988: UP) on January 31, 2024, it certainly holds importance on various counts: first Prashnat Kumar is the favourite police officer of the UP chief minister; two the government would like to place officer like him as in charge of the state policing before 2024 Lok Sabha elections; three law and order and women empowerment issues were better addressed under him; four the police administration is completely controlled by the CM directly for his uncompromising attitude towards it; fifth and the most importantly Prashant Kumar delivered the goods so far as the CM expected.
Going by the presumption one may find a clue to understand why there was interim arrangement with Vijay Kumar as ad hoc DGP of the state. Once there was full-fledged DGP with two complete years term it could have been impossible of the govt to clear the deck for another officer.
With the interim DGP Vijay Kumar retiring next month the deck is clear to draft a regular DGP for the state or an interim DGP at least till 2024 LS Polls.
