New Delhi (16.07.2025): Signalling a gap in leadership readiness among the available talent pool for such a critical role, the NaMo administration on Wednesday extended the tenure of Gurdeep Singh, the incumbent CMD of NTPC; India's largest power producer. He was due to retire on July 31, 2025. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the Ministry of Power's proposal for Singh's re-employment on a contract basis.
Initially, he was appointed in 2016 through a search-cum-selection committee and received another five-year term in 2020 on extension basis.
The PESB advertised the position in October 2024 and conducted interviews with a dozen shortlisted candidates in May 2025. It found none of the candidates suitable and proposed for SCSC route necessitating a year-long extension to Gurdeep Singh as CMD.
Key Highlights of NTPC's Performance Under Gurdeep Singh's Leadership:
NTPC generated a record 422 billion units in FY 2024, with a plant load factor of 77.25%.
NTPC Green Energy Limited operates 4 GW of renewable capacity, with 20 GW under construction, targeting 60 GW by FY32.
NTPC plans to develop 30 GW of nuclear capacity over the next two decades, with an estimated investment of $62 billion.
Successfully commenced green hydrogen blending in piped natural gas and rolled out its first municipal solid waste-to-green charcoal plant in Varanasi.
Tenure of NTPC CMD extended; re-employed on a contract basis
