New Delhi (19.08.2021): Having a vast role of preventive as well punitive vigilance the strength and occupancy issues makes a big difference in the performance of the anti-corruption watchdog. But pending at the top vacancies have made the Suresh N Patel (banking sector expert) a lone ranger in the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) as by default he is also holding the additional charge of CVC.

Even though CVC has only occasionally functioned full strength under the NDA administration, a new precedent is set with only one member running the show.

It may be underlined that former Haryana cadre bureaucrats Sanjay Kothari (Retd IAS:1978:HY) completed his term in the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) on 23 June 2021 as the Chief Vigilance Commissioner and Sharad Kumar (Retd IPS:1979:HY) completed his extended term as a member in October 2020, their posts have remained vacant since their departure.

The commission has two sanctioned posts of Vigilance Commissioners - each earmarked for IPS and Banking experts.

Even though the vacancies have already been advertised, the selection process is yet to begin.

In the given situation, the CVC is left with only one functioning member Suresh N Patel making it tough for the CVC to navigate its course in handling the mammoth mandate as anti-corruption watchdog.
