New Delhi (23.05.2021): Chhatisgarh's Surajpur Collector Ranbir Sharma (IAS:2012:CG) act of slapping a teenager, as shown in a viral video, has attracted universal condemnation. Earlier in 2015, Sharma was arrested for taking a bribe and attached to the secretariat in Raipur.

Although Sharma has been relieved of his responsibility and posted in the secretariat, the damage already done to the image of the IAS is irretrievable.

The video, which also showed Sharma directing police personnel to beat the teenaged boy, follows the earlier video of another IAS officer in Tripura (DM Agartala), which showed how the latter disrupted a marriage ceremony and humiliated the groom in front of all the guests.

The anti-social behavior of Sharma and of Tripura's officer has made IAS officers hang their heads in shame.

Reacting to Sharma's misdeed, former Union Secretary Anil Swarup and the author of ‘Not Just A Civil Servant’ tweeted: "Such officers are a disgrace to the Civil Service. This act should be condemned by one & all & exemplary action taken against the concerned officer under the law".

Former J&K DGP, Dr SP Vaid tweeted “The behaviour of Surajpur District Collector is unacceptable. In this pandemic, people need healing touch rather than breaking their phones & slapping them. I congratulate Chhattisgarh CM for removing Collector & sending a strong message”.

Senior IAS officer Supriya Sahu (IAS:1991:TN) tweeted “Despicable behaviour Mr DM. Totally condemnable. I hear you have given an apology! No apology can take away the insult you inflicted on the unsuspecting person. You have jeopardized the committed work of hundreds of civil servants working day & night”.

The IAS Association early Sunday morning tweeted: “The IAS Association strongly condemns the behavior of Collector Surajpur, Chhattisgarh.

It is unacceptable & against the basic tenets of service & civility. Civil servants must have empathy & provide a healing touch to society at all times, more so in these difficult times.”
