New Delhi (28.08.2024): The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is inching closer to reach majority mark in the Upper House of Parliament as 10 NDA candidates have been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. This will help the alliance to pass key legislations with the support of six nominated members.
The RS by-elections were announced on 12 seats which fell vacant as sitting MPs were elected to the Lok Sabha. A total 11 candidates have been elected unopposed while candidate from Tripura will be decided through voting on September 3, 2024. The effective strength of the RS is 237, with four vacancies in the nominated category and four others bringing the majority mark to 118 and NDA is close to the majority mark with 114 MPs and BJP alone having 95. 
The candidates elected on Tuesday included Union ministers Ravneet Singh Bittu (Rajasthan) and George Kurian (Madhya Pradesh). Other BJP candidates who got elected are Kiran Choudhry (Haryana), Mamata Mohanta (Odisha), Manan Mishra (Bihar), Mission Ranjan Das and Rameshwar Teli (both from Assam), Dhairyasheel Patil (Maharashtra). Rashtriya Lok Morcha's Upendra Kushwaha (Bihar) and NCP's Nitin Patil (Maharashtra) of NDA were also elected unopposed.
Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi has been declared unopposed from Telangana.
