When Speaker asked his social-media handlers to delete posts?

Social media is ruthless to anyone as far as response on contents posted on different platforms are concerned, so has been the case with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla when two posts one concerning Digamber Jain saint and another related to Brahmins were decried. There was so much outrage that he had to ask his social media handlers to delete a few posts.

What his handlers fails to count on was the sensibility of the content as Speaker is a constitution position and none of his view could be deemed as personal. Those handling his social media must be able to gauge the repercussion of any post before they are made public.

Triple talaq bill to tell the real strength of the NDA in Rajya Sabha!

New Delhi: It is the floor management of the house by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that seems to be working for party when the triple talaq bill is introduced in the Rajya Sabha. The Bill has already been cleared in the Lok Sabha. But actually opposition political parties are wary if the bill will be stalled in the Rajya Sabha again as in the past. The bill makes instant Triple Talaq illegal and entails three years jail and a fine for offenders.

The BJP got Parliament sessions extended in view of these important bills. The BJP feels that any amendment in triple talaq will take away its deterrent factor. So neither the BJP is ready to make any changes in it nor do they want to send it to Parliament select committee. There is another thing out of these developments that the BJP wants to fathom depth of opposition before 35A is taken up in Parliament.

Meanwhile, the entire opposition is anxious as it failed to send the amendments to the Right to Information Act to a Select Committee last week but what they feel that triple talaq is a little tricky and even some of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners like Janata Dal (United) might not support the government on this issue. But the concern of the NDA is not their support but if they join the opposition block and the prevailing situation in NDA vie-e-vis JD (U) is such that anything might happen. JD (U) chief is looking for an opportunity to teach the BJP a lesson.

Opposition political parties are not yet sure how to deal with the triple talaq bill in the Rajya Sabha where the NDA still does not have a majority and it has to depend on Biju Janata Dal, Telangana Rashtriya Samiti and YRSCP. But TRS has certain reservation on triple talaq issue so the NDA will have to chalk out a new strategy. The opposition political parties that are clear in their ideas about opposing this bill included the Congress, TMC and the Left Front out of which the TMC is the most vocal. The rest of the opposition has failed to figure out how to prevent the NDA that it is not able to get it passed. Meanwhile, the BJP has issued a whip to its MPs.

It is not the party but some of the MPs belonging to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Nationalist Congress Party and Samajwadi Party who were not very enthusiastic on RTI Bill benefiting the NDA, it is to be watched out for if the same thing happens in triple talaq case. It would also be interesting to see how many opposition MPs will turn up to oppose the bill.

BJP gets ready with its mission Coromandal Coast for next five years

By IndianMandarins 03 Jul 2019

New Delhi: Winning states along the Coromandal Coast is the new mission for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the next five years and the BJP has already started working there from very long as these are the areas where the BJP has lots of hopes. Besides Jammu and Kashmir, states like Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Odisha and West Bengal are states where the party still not only wants its chances to improve in the Lok Sabha but also replace the state governments.

National secretary of the BJP Sunil Deodhar, who is credited with ousting the Communist government in Tripura, is working in Andhra Pradesh 24X7 to make prospect of the party better in the state besides many other leaders. The BJP has been successful up to some extent in West Bengal and Odisha but now they have added two more states into their scheme of things.

A BJP leader is of the view that in such areas where the party does not have any presence, you need a lot of perseverance and these new areas will help the BJP getting majority in 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The way party has managed loss of Uttar Pradesh from West Bengal, anti-incumbency of some other places will be matched up from these states.

The BJP is of the view that the wheel has rolled on in these states with the party winning 18 seats in West Bengal, Telengana 4, Odisha 8 however the party failed to get any seat in Andhra Pradesh which of course is a big challenge but party needs some more efforts. The party might induct some leaders from other political parties to the BJP fold as it did in West Bengal and Odisha.

So the new mission for the BJP and its leadership are these states. BJP president and Union home minister Amit Shah recently had an exclusive meeting with the leaders of the West Bengal as their eyes are on Assembly elections in the state. Assembly elections in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh will take place along with 2024 Lok Sabha elections while in Telengana they will happen little early.

So 21 seats in Odisha, 17 seats in Telengana, 42 seats in West Bengal and 25 seats in Andhra matter a lot for the BJP so it has started not only working among the people but also started winning over local leadership who can help making dent into people of these states.

Fear of not returning to next Lok Sabha stopping BJP leaders to take up Speaker’s job

By IndianMandarins 10 Jun 2019

Names of former Union ministers Maneka Gandhi, Jual Oram, S S Ahluwalia, Radha Mohan Singh and Dalit leader from MP Virendra Kumar are doing rounds for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker but no one seems to be amused with this rather they are shying away to take up the responsibility. The reason is that they don't want to retire for now.

Most of the Speakers did not return to the next Lok Sabha after being given the responsibility except Balram Jakhad who has the privilege of becoming Speaker for two consecutive terms. Second Speaker M A Ayyangar was made Speaker to complete the term of first Speaker G V Mavalanker after his demise. Neelam Sanjiva Reddy too became Speaker twice but not for the consecutive terms.

Outgoing Speaker Sumitra Mahajan opted out to contest Lok Sabha election when her name did not figure in the first list; her predecessor Meira Kumar lost election; Somnath Chatterjee was denied ticket and Manohar Joshi too lost in 2004. GMC Balyogi was made Speaker in the coalition era but he died in the office. He too was the Speaker for two Lok Sabha but none completed its term.

This apparently seems to the reason that BJP leaders don't want the job. Odisha leader Jual Oram has already refused to take up the responsibility and forcing anything on Maneka could be disastrous. So the party is left with a few choices like Radha Mohan Singh, S S Ahluwalia and Virendra Kumar.

Singh is a senior leader and the BJP wanted to deny him ticket and by making him Speaker the job will be done but there is a deputy chairman from Bihar that might save him. Ahluwalia had the only support system in Sushma Swaraj who herself is redundant in the party now. By making him Speaker representation from West Bengal will also go up and he is a seasoned man to do justice with the post. Virendra Kumar is a lesser known politicians, so will he be able to do justice is a big question. So Ahluwalia is the man to be counted on as the next Speaker.

Exit Polls 19 May 2019: Reading between the lines

By IndianMandarins 20 May 2019

Almost every exit poll has predicted a second term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Some of them are giving a clear majority to him while others having some constraints after the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections of 2019 got over. Seven important exit polls predict BJP-led NDA bagging over 300 seats except ABP-AC Neilson that restricts NDA at 277 marks. A party or an alliance needs 272 seats to form the government. On the other hand the Congress is predicted that it not likely to cross 100 mark which had 44 seats in 2014 Lok Sabha. The overall tally for NDA varies from 277 to 365 seats in different exit polls out of 543-member Lok Sabha. However, there are sections that still find the survey figures too unrealistic to believe.

These surveys have underlined certain trends very clearly however the actual result will not be what the polls indicate. Actually, Modi has turned elections as a referendum between him and the rest by offering people of the country between him and none making issues concerning states and regional no takers.

Modi focused about beneficiaries of schemes of his government from six months before Lok Sabha elections were actually announced by putting every minister to reach out to people. Modi repeatedly mentioned pro-incumbency wave across the country for Modi 2.0.

Interestingly this time round the Modi Wave (2.0) seems to have transcended Hindi heartland barring UP but certainly not for the South India. West Bengal, Odisha and North East have emerged as NaMo-Shah risk management model which may compensate the loss of seats in UP.

Modi-Shah combination appears to have crossed the boundaries fixed by their detractors. In 2014 entire BJP fought the elections whereas in 2019 it was Modi-Shah plus RSS cadre.

The exit polls figures might not possibly tally with the results on 23 May. It may be underlined that exit polls failed to predict BJP’s historic numbers (72) in UP in 2014 LS polls. Further, it did fail to predict UP and Bihar Assembly elections.

In case the surveys turned out to be close to final results on 23 May,  Modi and Amit Shah will rule the turf fine five years further changing the political landscape of the country making Rahul Priyanka tough to regain the lost ground.
