The Maharashtra government appointed two new members to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC). The new members are Mukesh Khullar (IAS:1985) who took VRS recently and Iqbal Bohari, a former judge of the Family Court in Nagpur. Currently, Anand Kulkarni is the Chairperson of MERC.
It may be mentioned that the High Court had in January 2018 disallowed a single-member bench from hearing matters. The Apex Court too had made its firm observation that one of the members of the commission should be from the judiciary following which Department of Energy had advertised the vacancies and a Search Committee, headed by Justice A R Deshpande had shortlisted the duo (Khullar & Bohari).
