NEW DELHI (11.05.2026): While the BJP-NDA and TVK stabilized
governments in states where election results were declared on May 4, 2026, the Congress-led UDF
in Kerala remains in limbo. Despite unseating the LDF with a commanding 102
seats in the 140-member House, a three-way internal rivalry is delaying the
naming of the Chief Minister. The Contenders: K C Venugopal (KCV): Currently leading the race with the
reported backing of over 50 out of 63 Congress MLAs and State President Sunny
Joseph. The AICC General Secretary’s proximity to the High Command remains his
greatest leverage. V D Satheesan (VDS): The architect of the 2026 victory,
Satheesan enjoys the support of the IUML (22 seats). Analysts warn that
bypassing him could trigger a party split, with rivals like the CPI(M) and BJP
reportedly ready to back a Satheesan-led faction. Ramesh Chennithala (RC): Despite the most extensive
administrative resume, the former LoP currently finds a bleak prospect for
himself. Though, not side-lined by the central leadership yet finds himself
marginalised in the game. The Numbers Game: With Congress holding 63 seats, the IUML (22) and Kerala
Congress (8) hold significant sway. While AICC observers Mukul Wasnik and Ajay
Maken have completed one-on-one consultations, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul
Gandhi have yet to break the deadlock. Observers note that while Tamil Nadu saw a decisive
transition, the "unpleasant past" of factionalism in states like
Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan is repeating in Kerala, leaving the UDF
victory overshadowed by leadership paralysis.
