New Delhi (30.06.2026): In a key top-level bureaucratic reshuffle, the Government of India on Tuesday appointed Amit Kumar (IPS: 1994: BH) as the next Director of the Special Protection Group (SPG), the elite security force responsible for the protection of the Prime Minister.

Kumar, a senior officer of the Bihar cadre, is currently serving as the Special Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Kumar has been brought in as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) within the SPG with immediate effect to facilitate a smooth transition. He is slated to formally take charge of the premier security agency on April 1, 2027, succeeding the incumbent chief Alok Sharma (IPS: 1991: UP) who will be superannuating on March 31, 2027, after heading the elite wing.

The SPG is a highly specialized force tasked with providing proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and their immediate family members residing with them.
