KOLKATA (11.05.2026): As the 'double-engine' administration begins the high-stakes task of recalibrating West Bengal’s security apparatus, the New Delhi establishment appears to have zeroed in on a strategy of continuity.
Highly placed sources indicate that the Union Home Ministry and the state government have reached a consensus to retain Siddh Nath Gupta (IPS: 1992: WB) as the Director General of Police (DGP), despite his formal retirement last month.
Gupta, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur known for his technical acumen and low-profile efficiency, attained the age of superannuation on April 30, 2026. However, the Centre is reportedly keen on granting him an extension or a contractual reappointment to ensure stability during the delicate post-election transition.
It may be underlined that he was handpicked by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in March 2026 to lead the state force, replacing the then-incumbent Piyush Pandey (IPS: 1993).
While Pandey remains in service until December 2028, the decision to stick with Gupta signals the new government’s preference for his "neutral and firm" handling of the state's complex law-and-order landscape.
