New Delhi (01.07.2026): In a definitive move to maintain diplomatic continuity amid a packed multilateral calendar, the Centre on Wednesday extended the service tenure of incumbent Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri (IFS: 1989) by one year.

As reported early this morning, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) issued an official order ensuring that Misri, who was otherwise scheduled to complete his current fixed tenure on July 15, 2026, will now helm the country's top diplomatic office until July 14, 2027.

The 12-month extension signals the Modi 3.0 administration’s reluctance to alter leadership just as New Delhi prepares to host the high-stakes BRICS Leaders Summit this September under its 2026 Chairmanship.

A seasoned career diplomat and China expert, Misri took charge as India's 35th Foreign Secretary on July 15, 2024. He was previously granted a 20-month post-superannuation extension in November 2024 to protect his two-year fixed term. With this fresh extension, the government has anchored its foreign policy apparatus under a steady hand to steer crucial geopolitical transitions over the next fiscal year.
