Following the rule of seniority to appoint successor, the
outgoing Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has recommended Justice Sharad
Arvind Bobde’s name in a letter to the Centre. Justice Bobde is the senior-most
judge in the Apex Court after CJI Gogoi who will be retiring on November 17
this year. Conventionally, the outgoing CJI sends the recommendation for
his successor 30 days before demitting office and that is considered as the
countdown of the process of appointing the next CJI. Justice Bobde is likely to
assume office on November 18 as the 47th Chief Justice of India. It was Justice Bobde who played a key role in settling
differences between the four Supreme Court judges who held a press conference
against then CJI Dipak Misra in January 2018.
