jaishankar-joins-tata-sonsAs Indianmandarins had reported first on 17 February 2018, former External Affairs Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar (Retd IFS:1978) has freezed his berth on the Tata Sons board as President of Global Corporate Affairs. He may simultaneously also function as the Resident Representative of Tata in Delhi. He is said to have been offered a highly attractive package including a bungalow in Lutyens' Delhi. Before and after Jaishankar's retirement, speculations were thick about his accommodation in the PMO including the National Security Agency. However, having played a frontal role in changing India's foreign policy in the last three years, he might not have been inclined to playing a subsidiary role in any capacity. His association with Tata Sons, may enable him to further the pragmatic aspects of the country's external economic relations besides exposing him to the dynamics of economic relations between India and world. For Tata Sons, it would get a mature and expert foreign policy expert to carry its overseas footprints further - particularly in the USA and the EU. For the Tata group, the appointment of Jaishankar will come as a shot in the arm as the group's large portion of revenues now comes from abroad. The group has to negotiate with various governments to lobby for its interests. For example, Tata Steel Europe's merger with Thyssenkrupp will require permission from various governments in the European governments.
