New Delhi (15.07.2024): Senior Congress leader K Suresh has been appointed as the chief whip of the party in the Lok Sabha. Sources said K Suresh has been elected to the Lok Sabha eight times and so he could have been considered for the position of deputy leader in the Lok Sabha but position of deputy leader has been given to Gaurav Gogoi. The senior Dalit leader from Kerala has been made chief whip.
The Congress leadership first contested appointment of Bhartruhari Mahtab as pro tem Speaker for Suresh and later fielded him for the post of Speaker as I.N.D.I.A. candidate but did not ask for division of votes in the Lok Sabha and conceded defeat. Now, the appointment of K Suresh as deputy leader was vested with the Congress leadership. But he has to be contented with the position of chief whip.
