The government has no plans to
increase the age of retirement of judges of the Supreme Court from 65 years to
67 years and that of high courts from 62 years to 65 years. It may be noted
that Approx 36% posts of judges are currently vacant. A Parliamentary Standing
Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice report had
recommended raising the retirement age of judges. The Standing Committee, in
its 99th report tabled in the Parliament on Thursday, made the recommendation
in view of a large number of vacancies and pendency of cases in the higher
judiciary.
