The Centre has turned down RTI
requests for information on the factors leading to the removal of CBI chief
Alok Verma last October since the legal validity of the order is being
addressed in the Apex Court. It may be recalled that DOPT and
CVC had, on 23 October 2018, invoked powers of superintendence over the premier
agency to issue orders divesting Verma of his powers. Anjali Bhardwaj, co-convenor of
the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information, had filed RTI requests
with both CVC & DOPT, seeking the copies, file notings and correspondence
pertaining to the orders. Citing particular sections of the
RTI Act, that provide exemptions for information, the CVC denied the RTI
requests whereas DoPT said all orders issued on that date were available on its
website.
