KOLKATA (16.05.2026): In a major administrative crackdown on his first weekend in office, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday suspended three senior IPS officers—including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal (1994: WB)—for their alleged role in mishandling the 2024 R G Kar Medical College rape and murder investigation.
Alongside Goyal, the state government placed Abhishek Gupta (2011: WB), the then DCP (North), and Indira Mukherjee (2013: WB), DCP (Central), under suspension pending departmental proceedings.
The Chief Minister alleged that the officers were complicit in attempting to compromise the probe, citing unauthorized press conferences and attempts to offer financial inducements to the victim's family. The victim's mother is notably now a BJP MLA.
The decision marks a sharp break from the previous administration's stance on the August 9, 2024 tragedy, where a junior doctor was found violated and murdered inside a hospital seminar hall. While the CBI continues its core criminal investigation, the state’s swift executive action signals a comprehensive clean-up of the local police hierarchy under the new political regime.
