His name is shortlisted in a panel of IPS officers for the post of Director General of Police (DGP), Himachal Pradesh. The panel also included Anurag Garg (IPS: 1990) and Rakesh Aggarwal (IPS: 1994). But the government may prefer the incumbent officiating DGP Ashok Tiwari (IPS: 1993) who is holding additional charge of Himachal Pradesh DGP, following the retirement of former DGP Atul Verma (IPS: 1991 batch) on May 31, 2025.

Negi was serving as Special Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat, New Delhi before being repatriated while Tiwari served CBI as Joint Director during the UPA government at the Centre. So, sources are of the opinion that the state government may prefer regularising Tewari over Negi in all likelihood.
