The
search and selection committee for appointing a new CBI director may meet again
in a few days - definitely before January 31 - as the government couldn't
marshall all the facts and figures about as many as six batches from which
officers are speculated to have been picked up. Congress
leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who is a member of the committee, desired for full
details about all the shortlisted candidates. Another member, CJI Ranjan Gogoi
is said to have concurred with the argument of Kharge for full details on
candidates before a decision could be reached. The
government is said to have placed before the committee a list of about 80
officers belonging to batches from 1980 to 1985. It was a bare list, stating
who was eligible and who was not. The first list included the names of some
officers from 1980 and 1981 batches, who have all superannuated. The second
list of officers reportedly included 19 names from the 1983 batch, 22 from the
1984 batch and 40 officers from the 1985 batch. This was done in line with the
Supreme Court’s guidelines to consider all IPS officers from the three most
senior eligible batches for the post.
