New Delhi (12.06.2024): Targeting someone ruthlessly can never become an excuse to discipline people and this can certainly not be termed as professionalism. The case in point is a unique misuse of power by the Chairman/CMD of a Maharatna PSU against his protocol officer. Well-placed sources say that a very powerful Chairman/CMD of the PSU has put his protocol officer (PO) under suspension since February 2024.
Insiders say that this below-board-level officer, who is about to retire in a couple of months or a year, is being punished for none of his faults and consider his suspension an example of ruthlessness and highhandedness.
As it goes, the PSU as the lead organiser of the national-level annual business week early this year had an elaborate arrangement in a posh hotel in the coastal region of India for four days. Reportedly arrangements were as per the standard norms followed by any such public-sector business entity. Arrangements were made for the stay of ministry officials, guests and the Chairman’s/CMD’s camp office. Reportedly, the event turned out to be a grand success and the PSU and its Board of Directors as well as the officer in question were lauded for efficient management. What went wrong with the PO was that the bills raised in the name of the Chairman’s/CMD’s camp office also included food & lodging expenses of ministry officials and industry dignitaries which made the Chairman/CMD furious.
Sources claimed that this was the only mistake of the officer that eventually led to his suspension. Well-placed sources say that at best, he could have maximum been issued a warning letter as per convention. Interestingly, the officer approached the concerned minister’s wife but even she was asked to stay out of it was the audacity of the chief of the PSU. In view of these developments, employees of the PSU find it unwelcoming.
