New Delhi (17.02.2025): The name of the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) may be announced anytime soon as the three-member selection committee met at the Prime Minister's Office at South Block. The incumbent CEC Rajiv Kumar (IAS: 1984: JH) is retiring on February 18, 2025.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah who was nominated by the Prime Minister.
After the recommendation of the three-member selection committee headed by the Prime Minister, the President will appoint the new CEC of India. Appointment of CEC has undergone many changes but till the time of the appointment of the last CEC, the senior-most Election Commissioner was promoted as the CEC.
The selection committee will submit its recommendation to the President and the next CEC will be appointed by the President on the basis of that recommendation. This will be the first appointment of the CEC in India under the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioner Act, 2023. The Act came into force in December 2023 and since then there have been many significant changes in the appointment process of Election Commissioners.
Under this new Act, SS Sandhu (Retd IAS: 1988: UK) and Gyanesh Kumar (Retd IAS: 1988: KL) were appointed as Election Commissioners in March 2024. Both commissioners were appointed after Arun Goyal's resignation and Anoop Chandra Pandey's retirement. In such a situation, the current appointment of CEC will be the first appointment to be made under this Act.
