Modi, the great leveler: Some old tactics don’t work in NaMo regime

Just keep matching dots ever since NaMo administration took over the command over the system and you would find a pattern. Modi has been a great leveler.

For Modi dispensation, everyone is made to realise that they are equal be it a commoner or a cabinet minister. No one can force any decision whatsoever their past had been as important decisions will have to be approved by the PMO and there is no guarantee that senior minister’s wish is always honored.

In the cases of appointment of bureaucrats, a senior union minister was denied officers of his choice during NaMo 1.0 but a minister close to Nagpur establishment was also very politely communicated recently that he would have to work with the same officers he was wanting to be removed despite the minister going to the extent of threatening.

Modi’s mission and Shah’s action earn brand equity

After the abrogation of Article 370 & 35A, J&K is returning to normalcy. Connectivity is retrieved and restrictions are lifted. The Govt has claimed that not a single casualty has taken place over a period of 30 days.

The flawless execution of ‘Mission Kashmir’ has apparently become the brand equity of Union Home Minister Amit Shah -- the most trusted lieutenant of the PM Modi. The government sorted out several tough tasks be it demonetisation, triple talaq, surgical strike and smashing the special status of Kashmir.

Amid oppositions from within and outside, Modi-Shah has not only nullified its attack but alienated Pakistan with its exhaustive home work before executing its plan. They did not allow the matter to get leaked to anyone at the home front.

There has been a general practice that all party meeting is convened before taking such big decisions but whenever the matter is discussed at all party meeting it is mostly recommended to Parliamentary Standing Committee and always remains in Limbo forever of which women reservation bill is a testimony.

The government played emotional card, divided opposition on the issue of Nationalism, put security arrangements well in place, Valley was cleansed from terrorists. But the government appeared resolute even if it had to evacuate Amarnath pilgrims and tourists in Kashmir facing their ire.

It is not that things remained hunky dory for the duo. The issue of demonetisation is still debatable, GDP has gone down to 5 per cent, cleanliness mission of Ganga proved to be a damp squib, unemployment still haunts the country but Modi-Shah duo take everything to a logical conclusion come what may.

The government neither succumbed to the pressure of political parties nor civil society on any of the issues as mentioned above. Moreover, they are rather preparing road map for J&K to ensure smooth elections in the state. BJP’s organizational structure is working day in and day out to ensure a win. De-radicalisation is another plan on which the government is very serious about in its K plan.

Rahul’s tweet on Yoga Day: Bad publicity can be better than no, or poor, media visibility ?

By IndianMandarins 22 Jun 2019

Congress Party president Rahul Gandhi has of late been keen on optics though for several awkward reasons. He tweeted on Friday appending a couple of pictures of Army Dog Unit under the caption ‘New India’. This has, indeed, tried to take a dig though in a roundabout way at the virtual cult that the ruling BJP has been able to build over the years around PM Narendra Modi and his pet programme Yoga Day which has attracted appreciation from across the world.

Rahul’s tweet with the picture of Army dog squad canines going through yoga motions alongside the Jawans of the unit on PM’s favourite Yoga Day, June 21, has greatly ruffled feathers in political quarters. The intended pun pulled by Congress leader has obviously been directed against the formidable rivals.

The people in power corridors say that RG’s tweet might have spurred from the fact that BJP appears to have grabbed most of the hot national issues from the hands of its opponents, leaving almost none for Congress.

Yet, the tweet has become a media sensation at a time when the grand old party has been boycotting television debates by withdrawing its spokespersons and senior leaders from TV channels. Congress blames most media channels of habitually fawning over the BJP and the Government led by it and treating the Opposition, or mainly the Congress, with visible bias.

Thus, the Congress president has tried via his tweet to bounce back and possibly seize and dominate the media scene, courtesy a TV spectacle like Yoga Day, while his party is ostensibly shunning the TV channels for past few weeks or so.

More than being the brainchild of Rahul the tweet appears to be a salvo fired by the communications department of the Congress. The department has been drawing flak under the stewardship of Congress leader from Haryana Randeep Singh Surjewala for its weak media strategy and poor outreach. This is more so following the crushing defeat of the party in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

The Congress tweet clearly tries not only to toggle along millions of other Yoga Day posts on twitter but is also meant to send the BJP in a tizzy by scoring more hits and beating it in its favourite social media game. This is so while being unmindful of the savage troll that the Congress leader has to come to face by now for his quite controversial tweet. It has been castigated by top BJP Ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah among others.

The idea behind Rahul’s tweet has apparently been taken from the brand name of an old British music company HMV, or His Master’s Voice.

Rahul has indeed been mercilessly trolled. Yet, it appears that the idea behind his apparently bizarre move is that even bad publicity can be better than no, or poor, media visibility as has been the case with the Congress in recent times.

Dealing with Trump's hasty ambush

By IndianMandarins 04 Jun 2019

Readying to hit Iran hard, US President Donald Trump, who is seen as a reincarnation of famous or infamous Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible, has pressured India's pain points. The withdrawal of preferential duty on some Indian goods may hit New Delhi's exports worth $6.5 billion on top of severely damaging its Exim business with Iran following the US move that has already brought India under the Iran sanction regime - from which there was a waiver for some time. Add $2.5 billion of India's exports to Iran, and the total damage to Indian exports works out to $9billion in one single Trump stroke. This is not a small amount for a country like India that has been for years running huge trade deficits reaching a record $176 billion in FY19.

Like all relationships, Indo-US relations have not been without pain points. Without going far deep into the past particularly the Indira-Nixon years, one could see those pain points emerging and hurting the overall ties between the two great democracies. And creating avoidable uncertainties in the minds of the leaders of both countries. Take, for instance, the relationship between the two countries following the signing of Indo-US, or US-India, civil nuclear deal. While the deal helped India engage in legitimate nuclear commerce, it didn't help the US very much till recently when its nuclear power building company Westinghouse got out of insolvency problem.

Even though the blame for the failure to avail of the benefits of the nuclear deal lay squarely on US businesses, bitter sentiments marked Washington grievances on the issue. True, everyone has a tell-tale tendency to eat the cake and have it too. But nations, like individuals, resolve this problem through dialogue and negotiations. Of course, the bitter US feelings for not getting immediately the benefits of the nuke deal was mitigated and assuaged to a large extent by a series of defense deals.

And defense and related technology deals are possibly the best means to carry forward and smoothe the relationship between the two countries straining under huge trade deficit of over US$20 billion in India's favor and apparently unequal playing field between Indian and American businesses, made worse, for instance, by one tax rules for Indian e-commerce companies and another for US and other companies. It seems the tax rules changed in the last months of 2018 might have been born out of a miscalculation on the part of the government which read too much in the personal conflict and disliking between Amazon boss Jeff Bezos and President Trump who often exchange not too pleasant greetings on the Twitter. Prone and extremely vulnerable to malicious gossip, we Indians have a self-destructive pathological tendency to mix gossip with state policy.

The trade deficit of US$176 billion in FY19 tells us a disturbing story - that we don't have money in our ATM and that we are living off on borrowed money. It also tells us that there are serious structural problems with our economy and political governance. Clearly, the US is in a position to help us improve our economy. But they want something in return - fair treatment for their businesses vs spent forces of Indian businesses. They are ready with their proposals for massive investment in defense industries, stressed assets reconstruction, manufacturing, and marketing and so on.

The question is are we ready?

Eyes of the global leaders on a soon to be $5 trillion economy!

By IndianMandarins 25 May 2019

Victory of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not only impact domestic but global scenario as well where he has carved his niche for himself as a strong leader. This is reflected from the fact that not only Indians are rejoicing the victory of Modi but congratulatory messages are pouring in from abroad. The world order is changing.

Actually global leaders are looking at India as a future $5 trillion economy and one of the biggest markets of the world. Some of the leaders are looking at Modi as a strong hand to fight global terrorism of which India is the worst sufferer. So right from President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena to King of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to the US president Donald Trump to former Prime Minister of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda to Vladimir Putin. Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu too called up Modi to congratulate him for his astounding victory.

It is likely that PM would start his new inning by visiting a south Asian country like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh or Maldives. Modi expressed his readiness to work even more closely for the benefit of the people of Sri Lanka and the region with the Lankan president

President Trump congratulated Modi for his victory and the two leaders agreed to meet at the forthcoming G-20 Summit in Osaka, Japan to discuss bilateral relations and global matters. They also agreed to work together for further enhancing the close and strategic partnership between the two countries.

Modi received congratulatory calls world leaders including Prime Minister of Bangladesh, King of Bhutan, Prime Minister of Bhutan, Prime Minister of Nepal, President of Maldives, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka; President of Russia, President of France;  Prime Minister of Japan; Prime Minister of Australia; Prime Minister of Mauritius, Crown Prince of UAE and Prime Minister of Israel besides many others.

Expressing his gratitude for their good wishes, the PM thanked the global leaders for their cooperation in developing mutually beneficial bilateral relations and multilateral cooperation, and expressed his desire to continue to work further with them in fostering even stronger ties.
