New Delhi (17.02.2025): A day ahead of the completion of the tenure of Rajiv Kumar (Retd IAS: 1984: JH) the President of India, based on the recommendation of a high-powered committee, appointed Gyanesh Kumar (Retd IAS: 1988: KL) as next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India.
Rajiv Kumar will complete his term on Tuesday. Gyanesh Kumar will succeed Rajiv Kumar as 26th Chief Election Commissioner of India w.e.f. 19.02.2025. 
Gyanesh Kumar has served as Secretary, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and later became Secretary, Ministry of Cooperation under Amit Shah. Kumar was instrumental in establishing the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust while serving in the Ministry of Home Affairs. It may be underlined that while Article 370 was declared ineffective in 2019 Gyanesh Kumar was in-charge of J&K desk as Joint Secretary (later Additional Secretary) at MHA.
Further, Haryana Chief Secretary Dr Vivek Joshi (IAS: 1989: HY) was appointed as Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India.  Previously, Dr Joshi also worked in Govt of India as Secretary, Department of Financial Service and Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) before repatriating to Cadre as Chief Secretary in Haryana on 01.11.2024.
