New Delhi (13.02.2026): The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Thursday cleared the appointment of two senior IRS (Customs & Indirect Taxes) officers as Members of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). The move follows a high-stakes selection process that saw fifteen candidates interviewed for three vacant positions.
Officers from the 1992 batch appointed as Members at CBIC include Sanjay Mangal (IRS C&IT: 1992) and Abhai Kumar Srivastav (IRS C&IT: 1992).
Currently, Sanjay Mangal is serving as Chief Commissioner, Meerut GST & CX Zone, while A K Srivastav is DG of the Directorate General of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), the apex anti-smuggling agency.
Mangal has a service tenure until January 2027 while Srivastav is slated to serve until February 2028.
Selection Marathon Against Three Vacancies:
The selection process, which began in the last week of December 2025 and concluded in the third week of January 2026, was notably competitive. A total of fifteen shortlisted candidates were interviewed to fill vacancies created by the departures of Sanjay Kumar Agrawal (1988), Shashank Priya (1988), and Aruna Narayan Gupta (1989).
The 'Missing' Third Member?
While the ACC has filled two slots, the third position remains conspicuously vacant. Sources within the revenue corridors suggest that while a third name was on the verge of finalization, the appointment has been "put on hold" for the time being. Insiders hint that the administrative hierarchy is waiting for "the dust to settle" before moving forward with the final selection, sparking speculation regarding the internal vetting process.
