KOLKATA (15.06.2026): The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership faces a severe crisis as 64 MLAs and 20 Lok Sabha MPs have broken away to form separate factions. On Sunday, 20 dissident Lok Sabha MPs met Speaker Om Birla in New Delhi to formalize their transition, seeking a merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) to technically bypass the stringent disqualification threshold of the Tenth Schedule.
Apparently, it is BJP’s strategy to shift the political gravity toward the east while substantially fortifying the ruling coalition's legislative comfort in New Delhi.
Barely a month after its historic defeat in the Assembly elections, the TMC has plunged into its most severe existential crisis while Mamta Banerjee is facing a sweeping organizational mutiny. It also signifies a revolt against the centralized organizational control of General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
The ruling BJP is accused of engineering the split as part of its long-term strategy for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Having peaked in the Hindi heartland, the saffron party is reportedly turning its full attention to West Bengal to bypass local anti-incumbency and secure fresh ground.
High-level sources within the security and political grids indicate that the split is part of a calculated blueprint designed by the BJP ahead of the 2029 general elections.
