The appointment of Ms. Madhabi Puri Buch as a whole time Member of SEBI has underlined an interesting aspect pertaining to the selection of SEBI chief in which Ajay Tyagi (IAS:1984: HP) emerged as the winner. Very few are aware that at the final stage, the race for SEBI Chief post was between Tyagi and Ms. Buch. Most of the media reports, though, kept on speculating that Power Secretary P K Pujari (IAS:1981: GJ) or DEA Secretary Shaktikanta Das (IAS:1981: TN) might be selected for the post.
Indianmandarins has learnt that in the final panel for SEBI Chief sent to the PMO, there were only two names - Ajay Tyagi as number 01 and Ms Buchon as number 02. Top sources have confirmed to Indianmandarins that Ms Buch was a serious contender for the post. Since Tyagi emerged victotious, it was considered appropriate at the top that it would be in the larger interest of Sebi if Ms. Buch was appointed a whole time member of the stock market regulator.
Ms Buch, Founder Member of Agora Advisory Pvt Ltd, currently serves with New Development Bank (Shanghai). Previously she also served as CEO & MD of the financial services arm of the ICICI group and quit ICICI in 2011 for personal reasons and to relocate to Singapore.
It may also be noted that her husband Dhaval Buch is considered one of the most powerful persons in the corporate world and is posted in Singapore with global FMCG major Unilever and is part of Harish Manwani's team that is leading the company' businesses for Asia, Africa and some other regions. Buch was earlier part of Unilever's global team and was located in the UK.
