Power corridors see Dr. Anup Wadhawan (IAS:1985:UD) as a natural successor to Union Commerce Secretary, Mr. Rita Teotia (IAS:1981:GJ), who will retire on 31st of July this year. Wadhawan is currently serving as Special Secretary, Department of Commerce. He is considered a competent hand in finance and commerce and is said to have endeared himself to everyone by virtue of his manners and competence. However, Wadhawan's appointment as commerce secretary may necessitate a lateral shift of his senior Binoy Kumar (IAS:1983:TG) who has earned laurels for his contribution in transforming the department pertaining to the centralized procurement and purchase during his tenure as DG, Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D) under the Ministry of Commerce. Currently, he is serving as Special Secretary (Logistics), Department of Commerce. Of course, it is equally likely that Wadhawan may not become the commerce secretary. In that scenario, the question is who else is better suited to become the commerce secretary?
