Indianmandarins has reliably learnt that Ashwani Lohani (IRSME:1982) may be shortly named as Chairman, Railway Board. In case the information turns out to be true, the Board will get an officer as its chief whom the cadre officers consider as 'Turnaround Man'. Lohani has been heading the state-run carrier Air India since August 31, 2015.
At the same time, many cadre officers believe that Md Jamshed (Member, Traffic) may also be a good choice as he has a proven track record in operations and maintenance.
A K Mital (IRSS:1976) resigned on August 21 under extraordinary circumstances. It would be apt to underline the fact that Mital had retired on July 31, 2016, after a 19 month long stint as CRB but it was Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu who, setting aside the convention, rules & provisions, handed over the task of finding out a capable CRB to a search committee in the first week of July last year. Further, Mital was appointed CRB for another two years on a contract basis.
It is often said about Lohani that he never lets any opportunity slip out of his hand. In case, he is made CRB, he will have 16 months to unfold his plans to set the Indian Railways on a growth trajectory.
