Kolkata (19.04.2022): The West Bengal government is planning to carve five or more districts out of its existing 23. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, at a cabinet meeting, decided to request the Union government to assign more IAS and IPS officers to the state for the same. She asked chief secretary H K Dwivedi to write to the Centre about West Bengal’s acute bureaucrat crunch and seek more officers to help man the proposed districts.
To simultaneously boost manpower in state services, the cabinet has decided to form a committee of secretaries, headed by the chief secretary, and augment the number of WBCS (Executive) and WBPS officers inducted. Bengal proposes to form Sunderbans and Diamond Harbour districts from South 24 Parganas; Barasat and Basirhat districts from North 24 Parganas, and Jangipur district from Murshidabad. Ranaghat in Nadia may become a district while a new district may be carved out of North Dinajpur.
