The shortlist features a diverse pool of public and private sector talent, including 11 Executive Directors from energy majors such as NTPC, IOCL, GAIL, PGCIL, and PFC. Three sitting Directors from NTPC, GUVNL, and IOCL have also secured spots, alongside Tata Power MD Dipesh Nanda, signalling strong private sector interest.

The selection is being steered via the Search-cum-Selection Committee route, initiated after the PESB failed to find a suitable candidate during interviews in May 2025.

The vacancy officially arises on August 1, 2026, following the conclusion of Gurdeep Singh’s extended, decade-long tenure on July 31. The Ministry of Power had invited applications for the post earlier this year between February 28 and March 28.
