The unexpected repatriation last week of Udai Singh Kumawat (IAS:1991:BH), Joint Secretary, Department of Revenue, has created a lot of buzz. It is learnt that one more Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Finance may be repatriated.
Indianmandarins has reliably learnt Kumawat's repatriation was done at the behest of senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy who had written a letter on August 02 to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi recommending Kumawat's ouster from the Finance Ministry. Reportedly, Swamy complained that some senior officials in the Finance Ministry and CBDT were actively trying to derail the probes of ED and IT Department against P Chidambaram & his son Karti Chidambaram.
Contrary to the allegations, many senior IAS officers, who have worked with Kumawat and are familiar with his work ethos, say that the allegations did not carry any substance and the reason for his repatriation might be some kind of official exigency. It is pointed out four months ago, the Bihar government had sought repatriation of some officers in view of shortage of officers in the state. After Nitish joined the NDA, the central government quickly acceded to his request and repatriated Kumawat just a few months ahead of completion of his tenure at the centre.
