New Delhi (04.07.2023): When Union Home Minister Amit Shah pitted
senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for 2024 LS polls, it
surprised all and sundry as the BJP that was mocking and ridiculing the Gandhi scion
for his ability appeared to have taken a 360 degree turn. But what suddenly transpired
for this change of mind of the BJP? Political analysts and conspiracy theorists have their own views
on this issue. First, by pitting Rahul Gandhi against Narendra Modi, the BJP will
drive away such opposition leaders who too have aspiration for the top job of
the country. Second, the moment Rahul verses Modi is made, the BJP will have
the edge as there is still a huge gap in the popularity between Modi and Rahul.
Third, situation in the country of late has become such that any further attack
on Rahul may give him sympathy of people so there is no personnel attack on him
rather his political ideas are bulldozed. Fourth, in north India, the BJP does
not want the Congress to be part of any alliance as this will impact BJP’s
prospects if OBC leaders from UP and Bihar like Nitish Kumar, Tejeshwi Yadav
and Akhilesh Yadav join hands with the Congress for 80 LS seats in UP and 40 LS seats in
Bihar which will have spillover effects too in states like Jharkhand and MP. Further, the BJP wants to keep the bête noire Nitish Kumar
out of any reckoning who appears to be very fond of Rahul Gandhi these days. So
Rahul is getting what he might not have expected from the BJP and Nitish, but
elders say offering more respect to anyone eggs doubt. (By Rakesh Ranjan)
