New Delhi (25.05.2021): The NaMo administration on Tuesday announced the appointment of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal (IPS:1985:MH) as Director, CBI for a period of two years. Presently, he is working as Director-General, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). He also worked as Maharashtra DGP following the retirement of  Dattatray Padsalgikar on 28 February 2019. He also worked as Police Commissioner of Mumbai, the largest city in India and the seventh most populous city in the world. Jaiswal was with the Research and Analysis Wing (RA&W), India's external intelligence agency for nine years, during which he served as the additional secretary of RA&W for three years. Jaiswal, an alumnus of the University Business School (UBS), Punjab, belongs to Jharkhand (Sindri, Dhanbad).

The three-member high-powered selection committee comprising of PM Narendra Modi, CJI N. V. Ramana and Leader of Opposition Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury met late evening on Monday. Two top choices of the government Rakesh Asthana  (IPS:1984:GJ) and Y C Modi (IPS:1984:AM) were knocked out of contention for the coveted post in CBI. They were eliminated from the race after CJI used the ‘rule of law’ as ruled by the Apex Court in the Prakash Singh case (March 2019), where it categorically said that no officer with less than six months to retirement should be appointed as police chief.
