New Delhi (09.05.2026): If some well-placed sources are to
be believed the process for selection of next CBI Director has started.
Reportedly, six IPS officers are being considered for the coveted position at
CBI. The government may choose from the current DG Central
Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Gyanendra Pratap Singh (IPS: 1991: AM), Chief of
the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) Parag Jain (IPS: 1989: PB), DG
Narcotics Control Bureau Anurag Garg (IPS: 1993: HP), DG Indo Tibetan Police
Force (ITBP) Shatrujeet Kapur (IPS: 1990: HY), DG CRPF Yogesh Gupta (IPS: 1993:
KL) and DGP Maharashtra Sadanand Date (IPS: 1990: MH). The selection committee has Prime Minister Narendra Modi,
CJI Suryakant and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi who mull over the profiles
of the probable officers for the selection of CBI Director. The selection
committee is expected to meet next week. The current CBI Director Praveen Sood (IPS: 1986: KN) has
already been two extensions by the Centre and is all set to retire this month.
The name of the new CBI Director would be announced next week with the Centre
mulling over top IPS officers. Sood has been the only CBI Director to have received two
extensions in a row to serve as CBI Director post the date of retirement. While
the speculations of the third extension is doing rounds but this time the
Centre is choosing a new CBI Director.
